A sad little bundle of balloons stuck in the tree.

20 MayOne last look at the old apartment. It was such a bittersweet experience to leave. It was kind of him to let me have the place to myself for six weeks while I figured things out, but it was torture being there. I hated to leave and say goodbye to everything that we built in those 700 square feet, but once I left there was a huge sigh of relief.

19 MayThis was not a happy day. Without divulging too many details, the ex came over to hang out and clean, and we got into the same old discussion we’ve been having since we broke up. It’s painful, and I think we both end up saying hurtful things to one another. Both of us genuinely want to be friends, but right now, it’s just not possible. It took every ounce of strength in me to tell him that I didn’t want to speak to him or see him again for a while. I haven’t ruled out ever being friends, but right now, I can’t. It felt like we were breaking up all over again. I felt shattered…again.
So I went to Barnes and Noble, and despite being insanely broke, I bought these two DVD sets just to have anything to keep my mind off of the horrible day. I tried to justify the purchase to myself by saying that it was necessary for my survival. I texted my friend Kevin (one of the big names on the list of people I dearly miss in Seattle) and asked him if my justification was valid. He was the one that introduced me to “Ken Burn’s Baseball” after all. He replied, “It totally goes with matches, rope, and Twinkies.” Good to know my money was well spent.

19 MayI met up with my friend Chase at our favorite haunt Rudy’s. It had been a long time, and I was so happy to see him. Rudy’s is such a magical place. We ate hot dogs, drank cheap but delicious beer, and some girl promoting whiskey bought us free whiskey gingers in exchange for taking our picture. Score!
I headed out around midnight, pretty drunk and full to the brim with hot dogs. As I left the bar, I saw that my sister had called. I called her back as I walked to the subway. She was in the middle of a story when I reached the subway station, so I just kept walking. We had a long conversation, laughing and joking around. By the time we got off the phone, I realized I was only about 20 blocks from my apartment. I decided to walk the rest of the way. I put some Mika on my ipod and enjoyed the nice weather. All in all, it took me a little over an hour to walk from Hell’s Kitchen to my place on the Upper East Side, but it was 100% worth it.
Wow, and after writing this, I realize that the picture has nothing to do with any of it. I passed this on the way to the bar and thought it was funny. It was a very official looking building.

18 MayRemember those precious kittens that were found in Long Island? Of course you do! This is Fiver. He is the largest of the kittens but very mellow. Our office is insanely busy. Phones ringing like crazy, pet emergencies, medications to make, fussy doctors to deal with. The last huge rush is around five or six when people are getting off work and stop in to ask strange questions, pick up medications, pick up pets, etc. After that it is dead and often downright boring. It has become a regular habit to at that time go grab a kitten to bring to the reception desk to play with. It is the best time of day.

18 MayThis was the weekend I moved all my furniture. I wasn’t able to move into my new apartment yet, but I was able to get all my things there. My sister came down from Boston to help out. She was a HUGE help. Girl has got some superhuman strength. At one point, she lifted my dresser up BY HERSELF like it was nothing. My jaw was on the floor. On this day, which was beautiful, we wandered around Central Park. I took her to the castle which I had never been to. Her allergies were acting up, so we grabbed cheap beer and greasy appetizers at a bar with sidewalk seating. We talked about traveling and began planning an upcoming trip.

My dear friend Danguole knows how rough a time I’ve been having. She has done her fair share of fielding phone calls from me the last couple of weeks. To cheer me up, she bought me a ticket to go see one of our favorite bands, The Raveonettes, in Brooklyn. I was so excited. I can’t remember the last time I went to a concert to see a band that I wanted to see. The last time, actually, was probably with Danguole over a year ago when we road tripped to Vegas to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
I danced my butt off and drank a lot of whiskey gingers.
