My dear friend Chris was visiting from San Francisco. I met up with him in Greenwich village for some coffee and a lot of catching up. Back in the day, we used to get together roughly once a week. We assigned ourselves poems to examine and discuss. We even would write little assignments. Many of our good-intention writing sessions devolved into drinking a lot of whiskey and just hanging out, but we still encouraged each other to write and read poetry more.

Anyways, on this day we chatted about poetry and life. Then we meandered over to the famous Magnolia Bakery with supposedly the best cupcakes in the world. I’d like to quote the poetry of Andy Samberg from his song “Lazy Sunday“:

“Let’s hit up Magnolia and mack on some cupcakes.
No doubt that bakery’s got all the bomb frostings.
I love those cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling.

2? No 6? No 12? BAKER’S DOZEN!
I’m told you that I’m crazy for these cupcakes cousin.”

The cupcakes didn’t really live up to all the hype. I found the frosting a bit too heavy. But it was a lovely, lazy Sunday with an old friend. Check out his blog to the right. It’s called “Last Class“, and it is fantastic. He doesn’t update it very often, but when he does it is always a reading delight.

This is my go-to meal. I’ve been making it since my junior year of college. It’s the meal I make when I really want to make something for myself that I can believe is somewhat healthy and home-cooked. It’s super easy. I saute garlic, add some spinach, salt and pepper and throw it all over some pasta. Voila! I play around with it and throw whatever else is available in. This night, I added a chopped tomato, oregano, and red pepper flakes. It certainly hit the spot.

Well, as we all know, nothing in life is free. I ended up really paying for those five hot dogs I ate. I gave up my whole Friday. I don’t work on Fridays, so luckily I got to sleep in a bit. It was a gorgeous day, practically spring. 60 degrees and sunny. I wanted so badly to go outside, alas I could not. I spent most of the day curled up on my couch watching old Law & Order episodes, hating my hot-dog-loving self for wasting the beautiful day away. The only exciting part of my day was getting Chicken Noodle Soup from my neighborhood Chinese place. I’m addicted to it, and it was certainly nice to walk there in a light jacket.

I met up with my friend Chase at a dive bar in Hell’s Kitchen called Rudy’s. It seemed like the stuff of legend. Beers under $5 in Manhattan? Unlimited free hot dogs? Good atmosphere? No, these things couldn’t be true. But they were, and by the end of the night we were both declaring how Rudy’s was the best damn bar in New York. (This was after I had 5 beers and 5 hot dogs, I wasn’t keeping track of Chase, but I believe his numbers are similar.) It was a great bar though. We got an amazing booth right away. It was so coveted that a couple of girls bought us a pitcher of beer, just so they could share with us. The bartenders were cool and not uptight New York bartenders. Did I mention unlimited free hot dogs?

My new job is also in the Upper East Side and only a 20 minute walk from my apartment which I think is absolutely fantastic. I’ll save a lot of money on transportation costs, and I’ll get a little bit of exercise. Win! This was the perfect week to start walking to work. It was warm and sunny every day this week. That blue sky has been a rare sight the last couple of months.

Another lovely Valentine’s Day. Nothing crazy or extravagant. But since I have someone who is sweet all year round, I don’t need anything extra on this rather odd holiday. He brought me home a bouquet of flowers and cooked me an incredible dinner. He made chicken cordon bleu, rice, and steamed broccoli. He also lit some candles for the ottoman/coffee table and watched “The Princess Bride” with me. He was even kind enough to pose in my apron for a Project 365 picture. I’m certainly a lucky girl.

For Valentine’s Day, I made my favorite boy red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. I made them from scratch WITHOUT an electric mixer. No easy feat. Yet they were fantastic, if I do say so myself. He is worth every granule of sugar.

I am slowly learning how to get around the outrageous expenses of living in the city. On Saturday, from 5:45 till 7:45, the Guggenheim is pay what you want! It was great. I put in $6 for the two of us, and we had two hours to look at the art. It’s such a cool museum too. You just keep walking in circles and the art doesn’t end!

Our wild and crazy Friday night. We lounged around the apartment, until we decided to go hunt down a place called Milk and Cookies. Their website said they would be open until 11. We got there at 10:30 to find a locked door and different hours listed on the door. It said they closed at 10! We were so sad until the gentleman at the counter let us in to “warm up.” He ended up giving us a box of cookies. We had a coupon for a baker’s dozen, but he gave us more than that. This was the hasty picture I took of their window display. We took our cookies to a nearby Starbucks. It was our only option other than a bar, sadly. We both ordered milk and ate some of our cookies, like the old people we are.
