Before I left Reno, some good family friends gave me an envelope for both Travis and I. It had a very generous gift in cash. We decided that instead of using it towards something like cutting boards or 409 or any of the other miscellaneous things you have to buy when you move. We would use it towards something fun. So, on Friday night we went to the top of the Rock. First we walked a bit around Rockefeller Plaza and everything, but the roof only stays open till Midnight, so we headed up pretty quickly. You could tell that the place must be swarming during the day. But at 10:30 at night, we were two of a dozen or so tourists. It was a fantastic 360-view of the entire island. My camera behaved long enough for me to snap this picture of the south end of Manhattan. It’s amazing to look over the entire island and think that there are more people living here than in the entire state of Nevada. It’s an incredible place, and we have so much more to see!

R.I.P. Dicey Weather.

I used my day off to head into Midtown and try to get my paycheck from the lovely morons at Restaurant 1945. Unfortunately, they weren’t there. But I did get to say hi to some of my former co-workers who informed me that things are getting better there. It was starting to be a bit more organized right before I left, so I’m happy (for the sake of the other wait staff) that things aren’t quite so horrendous.

On the bright side, I met up with Travis for lunch in Bryant Park. He got the joyous information that he passed the first half of his CAIA test. I am so proud of him and knew he would do it. It also made me happy to know that those six weeks of separation were worth it. I bought him a lunch of street chalupas. It was a charming fall day.

I met up with Travis and some of his co-workers at a German bar in the East Village. It’s Oktoberfest! Very large beers, this German band, all of Travis’ co-workers completely drunk. It was an interesting night.

Before watching some “Dexter” together, Travis practiced his guitar. I like listening to him play. He jammed a little, then played me one of the songs he wrote. I feel like I am owed a performance every once in a while. There is free entertainment in New York.

At this point in my blog, I would like to apologize to anybody who read this expecting to hear about a Metropolitan existence like “Sex in the City” or to see gorgeous frames of the city straight out of a Woody Allen movie. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten the chance to be very touristy or to really carve out my niche in the city. Plus, it’s kind of fun to stay in with the boy. Our schedules are conflicting, so when we get to spend a couple of conscious hours with each other, we often tend to be tired. Not to mention that we are addicted to “Dexter.” So on Sunday when I came home from an early shift at Think, we hung out, watched Dexter, and ate some great pizza. We WERE adventurous though. There is a pizza place across the street from us called Roma’s that we frequent. But we walked two blocks to Luigi’s to get this delicious pie. All in the name of branching out. DELICIOUS.

Also, I have a really big crush on Dexter. I can’t help but feel like that is wrong or something. But, I mean, the actor isn’t a sociopath, and I think Dexter does have a soul. I just think he hasn’t realized it yet.

As I have previously demonstrated and explained, I am not a hat person. So I solved this issue of having to cover 70% of my head by buying head scarves. This, however, is not a scarf I bought. Travis let me have this. He used to wear it when he would play Cops and Robbers with his brother as children. Aw.

Walking to the subway after work, I saw a hot dog balloon. It was outside a bar, but there was no sign, no rhyme, no reason. Just a nice, floating hot dog balloon.

This is a very hastily taken picture right before an interview I had at an ESL academy. The interview was pretty standard, but I was shocked when I was offered a job at the end of it. Um, I’ve been in New York for less than three weeks, and this is my third job offer? Recession? What? I wasn’t even that excited, just shocked. I have to get certifications and all that, but they want me to start in November. I guess it’s a step in the right direction, it just felt rather overwhelming.

I took this as I left my third day of work. I really like it at Think. It is so laid back, and everyone I work with is nice. The space is awesome. I get free coffee and free food. I get to work with a bunch of artists, writers, musicians, all in the same boat as me, just needing a paycheck. It’s not a bad place at all.
